According to history, Kotabaru district there are several small kingdoms including royal Kusan and Pagatan, Cengal Manunggul and Bangkalan, Batulicin, Sebamban, Sand, and Sempanahan Cantung and large as Kusan kingdom and Pagatan, and Sea Island. It is estimated, kingdoms were established around 1786.
 

Kusan and Pagatan kingdom was founded around 1786 by Prince Amir a prince who fled from the kingdom Wood Tangi due to power struggles within the empire. Prince Amir holds King Kusan I. O nce he died replaced by Prince Moses brother of Sultan Adam Wood Tangi which then holds the King Kusan II. Approximately 1820 Kapitan La hanggawa recognized by Sultan Sulaiman (nephew Prince Amir) of wood Tangi as king Pagatan. Neither King II and King Pagatan Kusan, both subject under Tangi Wood Sultan and ordered to pay tribute. After King Kusan II died, he was succeeded by his son Prince Napis and styled King Kusan III.
 

In 1840, Prince Napis died and was succeeded by his son Prince Jaya Sumitra who holds the King Kusan IV and then he moved to the royal center Salino Sea Island which lies opposite the mouth of Pagatan, and handed over to the royal Kusan Whitewater Abdul Karim who later became king Kusan and Pagatan. 1881 Prince Jaya Sumitra died and was replaced by his eldest son, Prince Husin Kusuma who holds the King of Sea Island IV. After the prince died Husin Kusuma pilgrimage in 1900, the position he was succeeded by his son Prince Aminullah with the title King of Sea Island V which is the last king of Sea Island.
